ABC of article writing (Information for web site authors)

  • Mar 30, 11:26 AM

Click on the title of this article and then you should be able to print it out.
A) Upload an image (if you intend to use one):

Find / prepare image with longest dimention up to 250 pixels (absolute maximum width 500).
Once you’ve logged in click ‘content’ ‘images’ and ‘browse’ for your image. Then upload it.

(There is a way to use this programme to reduce the size of large images – 1) browse and upload your image 2) scroll down under your image and opt to create a thumbnail (just put in 250 for the longer of the two dimentions (leave the other dimention blank) 3) Literally drag the new smaller image onto your desk top, making a mental note of its new name 4) Replace the large image with the one you’ve just created.)

To make identification easy it’s good to make a thumbnail of the image – I suggest you put 50 into the height box (leave the width blank) and then click ‘create’
Categorise the image by the year it was taken.
Add Alternative text – this shows instead of the photo if a browser is set to not accept images. Don’t use the caption field.
Save the image.

B) Find out the image’s identification number:

On the images list, click the brown term ‘Textpattern’.
A new small window should open that displays an integer id.
Note down this number.

C) Write (or edit) your article’s text

Click on ‘write’ to prepare a new one or ‘articles’ and the article’s title, to edit an old one.
Write title and text. Don’t use abstract box.
On the Left hand side click ‘Advanced Options’ and put the image number in the ‘article image’ box.

(Advanced note – if you are writing a new ‘about us’ or ‘future events’ item – which you usually will NOT do – you should edit the existing one instead – then overide the form to about_future_form)

On right hand side put in one category (adrenalin, re.turn, etc, leave blank if very general item).
Assign section (almost always a new article will be ‘article’)
Leave other settings as they are and then click ‘publish’ (or ‘save’).

D) Click ‘view site’ (you may need to reload the page) to see your work.
