Football event is a success in Hamilton

  • May 12, 12:51 PM

Over 50 young people took part in a football tournament in Hamilton yesterday (Sunday April 27) organised by Hope Hamilton Church and neighbourhood officers.
A football cage was constructed in the car park at Tesco for an ‘It’s a Knockout’ style competition to get local youngsters involved in a positive weekend activity.
The football cage has been jointly funded by the Hope Hamilton Church, The Youth Evangilism Fund and the Keyham Lane Joint Action Group which includes representatives from the police and other partner agencies.
Reverend Phil White of Hope Hamilton Church said: “We were really pleased with how it went. It was the first time we have used the football cage but it was a great success. Everyone worked together well and demonstrated good sportsmanship.

PC Paul le Pla, the neighbourhood officer for Hamilton, said: “There isn’t a great deal for young people to do in Hamilton out of school hours, so the police have provided funding for the football cage to try and get youngsters off the streets and involved in positive activities. It’s also an opportunity to get young people interacting with other members of the community, including their local police officers.
“The event was a huge success with over 30 local youngsters turning up in just the first hour. They were all really well behaved and seemed to have a great time. We are already planning similar events to keep youngsters entertained during the school summer holidays.”
