Football event is a success in Hamilton
May 12, 12:51 PM, Ros Henwood
Over 50 young people took part in a football tournament in Hamilton yesterday (Sunday April 27) organised by Hope Hamilton Church and neighbourhood officers.
A football cage was constructed in the car park at Tesco for an ‘It’s a Knockout’ style competition to get local youngsters involved in a positive weekend activity.
The football cage has been jointly funded by the Hope Hamilton Church, The Youth Evangilism Fund and the Keyham Lane Joint Action Group which includes representatives from the police and other partner agencies.
Reverend Phil White of Hope Hamilton Church said: “We were really pleased with how it went. It was the first time we have used the football cage but it was a great success. Everyone worked together well and demonstrated good sportsmanship.
PC Paul le Pla, the neighbourhood officer for Hamilton, said: “There isn’t a great deal for young people to do in Hamilton out of school hours, so the police have provided funding for the football cage to try and get youngsters off the streets and involved in positive activities. It’s also an opportunity to get young people interacting with other members of the community, including their local police officers.
“The event was a huge success with over 30 local youngsters turning up in just the first hour. They were all really well behaved and seemed to have a great time. We are already planning similar events to keep youngsters entertained during the school summer holidays.”

‘Church’ for one congregation in Leicester does not finish with a cup of tea and then home for lunch. Hope Hamilton Church set out last Sunday afternoon to a piece of recreation ground nearby. There they set up a BBQ, untangled the kite strings and another time of worship began. Gradually, others arrived, played on the basketball court, had their nails painted, flew kites or simply chatted. A story from the Bible was included, and the time finished with a prayer.
It was a great time for getting to know the neighbours and for the church to be visible in the community.
faith and adventure
Phil White the minister says:
‘For too long now the Church has had only one way of doing or being Church – the gathered model of coming together in a dedicated building on a Sunday morning. We believe that there are other more creative models. Adrenalin is a new model of Church.
We hope to be church centred around a mutual interest of active and adventurous sports including canoeing, power kiting and climbing. In this context we will explore our faith in God.
We consider that the essence of Church is incorporated in three relationships, ‘Up’ with God, ‘In’ with each other and ‘Out’ with the wider community.
We use the swimming pool at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre and the River Soar for the canoeing.
We have a selection of kites and buggies and we fly locally on the public field on Sandhills Avenue, Hamilton.
Our aim is to provide an opportunity for people to have fun together as church …where life, fun, outdoor pursuits and faith interact.’
Adrenalin is for anyone – people with a faith or with none. All you need is an interest in the activities – no expertise necessary.

True Story... our hopes for Adrenalin

A young Australian man of 22 had got bored with Church. He suffered with ADHT (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and struggled to concentrate for any length of time – Church was particularly difficult!!
He decided that he would go waterskiing the next Sunday. This was his passion. He and two friends met at the lake and before they water-skied, he said, “I hope you don’t mind, but I’m used to being in Church on Sunday and I’d like to pray before we water-ski. Can I pray for any need you have? ”
One of his friends said he needed a job and the other told him that his mother was ill.
The young man prayed for them both and then they water-skied for the rest of the day. They agreed to meet back at the lake the following Sunday.
Sunday came and each of them had brought a few friends. The young man said the same thing again and was pleased to hear that one of his friends had got a job and the other’s mother had got well. He prayed for them all and they water-skied.
There are now 70 of them meeting each Sunday to water-ski. As part of their day they share Communion together on the beach and pray for each other.
